Context An accession of the annual legume Trigonella balansae Boiss. & Reuter. has been selected for commercial release in Australia. Aims As part a duty-of-care assessment, we tested hypothesis that sheep grazing trigonella will have liveweight, condition scores and wool production similar to those two widely adopted legumes, subterranean clover (subclover, Trifolium subterraneum L. cv. Dalkeith) French serradella (Ornithopus sativus Brot. Erica). We also hypothesised three legumes meat quality health, as indicated by blood plasma panel analysis. Methods Wethers (n = 6) grazed plots 4) pasture species. Liveweight, growth were measured, subset animals subject sampling assess health. Consumer sensory taste analysis was used eating from per plot. Forage biomass, dry-matter digestibility, crude protein, fibre, mineral content isoflavones measured across plant’s lifecycle. Comparisons of Cattle Grazing and Sheep Grazing

Controversy has surrounded the possible differences in pasture production which result from grazing by cattle or sheep. Experiments conducted over the 1972-76 period show that pasture production under grazing by sheep is greater than under grazing by cattle under similar intensive managements. A change from sheep grazing to cattle grazing can cause a rapid deterioration in pasture production, w...

Control of nematode parasites with reduced reliance on the use of anthelmintics was studied in 16 ewes with suckling twin lambs on contaminated pasture in Denmark. Ewes and lambs were treated with albendazole at turn-out 3 May. Ewes were removed from the groups on 26 July, and lambs were slaughtered on 11 October. The animals were allocated to 4 groups of 8 lambs and their 4 ewes. Group TS was ...

Grazing behaviour and diet selection by Dorper sheep.

The grazing behaviour and diet selection by Dorper sheep, as well as other related aspects (pasture intake, walking habits and trampling) is reviewed. It was clear that Dorper sheep are less-selective grazers, compared to Merino-type breeds. Dorpers utilised shrubs and bushes to a greater extent, but grass to a lesser extent in relation to Merino sheep. The Dorper also utilised a larger number ...
